ºÚÁÏÍø's Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences with a concentration in clinical prepares you diagnose and treat diseases. This program combines many sciences, including microbiology, hematology, chemistry, molecular biology and immunology. You'll learn to perform a variety of tests, ensure the accuracy of the results, explain the significance of lab results and evaluate new methods for tests.
The goal of this program is to prepare you to function as professional members of a healthcare team. Services that are utilized in hospitals, clinics and private labs, as well as the business and industrial fields. You'll gain skills to perform diagnostic lab testing competently and ethically with the purpose of contributing to the improvement of the population's health and wellness.
Clinical Immunohematology: This practicum provides structured, supervised training in routine and advanced serologic testing, component preparation, and transfusion support within an affiliated hospital laboratory. Students progress from observation to supervised practice and independent performance while adhering to established standard operating procedures, quality control requirements, and regulatory guidelines. The course emphasizes accurate interpretation of serologic results, resolution of discrepancies, and integration of laboratory results to ensure safe and effective transfusion practices.
Microbiology for Science Majors: Students in this course will learn specific information on the fundamentals of microbiology including cell types, cell structure, microbial growth and control, microbial metabolism, microbial genetics and biotechnology, microbes and human interactions, microbial pathogenesis and applied and industrial microbiology. Cause and effect relationships between microbial growth and human disease, interpretation of symptomatic and laboratory information in diagnosis of disease, prevention of disease and treatment of diseases are stressed. Laboratory activities will reinforce principles of microbiology, including metabolism, structure, function, genetics and phylogeny of microbes.
Genetics: General principles of heredity, including human inheritance.
Hematology/Hemostasis: This course covers hematopoiesis, hemostasis, red blood cell disorders, white blood cell disorders, platelet disorders, anemias, hemoglobinopathies, myeloproliferative neoplasms, myelodysplastic syndromes, acute leukemias, lymphomas, and body fluid analysis. The laboratory component provides hands-on experience in phlebotomy, blood smear preparation and staining, microscopic evaluation, WBC differentials, manual cell counts, reticulocyte counts, microhematocrit, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and coagulation testing. Emphasis is placed on pathophysiology, laboratory evaluation, and clinical correlation.
Clinical Chemistry: This course provides supervised practical experience in the clinical chemistry and urinalysis sections of an affiliated hospital laboratory. Students perform analytical testing, operate and maintain instrumentation, apply quality control procedures, and adhere to regulatory and safety standards. Emphasis is placed on accurate result reporting, correlation of laboratory findings with clinical conditions, troubleshooting, and professional behavior.
